The PDF Security Settings Dialog

Set the passwords and encryption level for PDF files:

Option name

Option description

Require password to open document Select this option if you wish to prevent the users from opening your PDF document unless they type the password you specify.
Document Open password Shows if a Document Open password is specified for PDF documents.
Note: If this password is set it is displayed with dots.
Opens the Enter Document Open Password dialog where you can type in this password and confirm it.
Permissions group
Restrict printing and editing  the document and its security settings Select this option if you wish to prevent the users from printing and editing your PDF document unless they type the password you specify. If some security settings are selected for the document the users will not be able to change these settings until they type the password you specify.
Permissions password Shows if a Permissions password is specified for PDF documents.
Note: If this password is set it is displayed with dots.
Opens the Enter Permissions Password where you can type in this password and confirm it.
Permissions settings group
Printing allowed Specify the allowed quality of printing for you PDF document. The following choices are available:
  • None
    This setting prevents the users from printing the document.
  • High resolution
    This setting allows the users to print the document at any resolution.
Changes allowed Specify which editing actions are allowed in your PDF document. The following choices are available:
  • None
    This setting prevents the users from
    making any changes to the document.
  • Modify the document (except for extracting pages)
    This setting allows the users to make any changes to the document, except remove pages.
Enable copying text, images and other contents Select this option to allow the users to select and copy text, pictures, etc. from your PDF document.
Enable text access for screen reader devices If this option is selected the users will be able to use screen readers to read your PDF document. They will also be able to copy information from the document.
This option is available only for a high encryption level.
Encryption level Set the type of encryption for a password-protected document. Select one of the following options:
  • Low (40 bit) - compatible with Acrobat 3.0 and above
    Sets a low (40-bit RC4) encryption level.
  • High (128 bit) - compatible with Acrobat 5.0 and above
    Sets a high (128-bit RC4) encryption level, but Acrobat 3.0 users cannot open PDF documents with this encryption level.
  • High (128 bit - AES) - compatible with Acrobat 7.0
    Sets a high (128-bit RC4) encryption level, but Acrobat 6.0 (or earlier) users cannot open PDF documents with this encryption level.
