About ABBYY Lingvo

HISTORY

ABBYY Lingvo is a software product of ABBYY, a leading developer of linguistic, OCR, and document capture software.

In 1989 David Yang, then an undergraduate student of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, and the programmer Alexander Moskalyov started work on an electronic dictionary - a computer program that would translate English words and phrases into Russian. In a radical break with tradition, they conceived an innovative system of dictionary cards, i.e. independent windows used to display dictionary entries. One year later Lingvo (the word means "language" in Esperanto) hit the bookshelves and became ABBYY’s first commercial product. 17 years on, ABBYY Lingvo has grown into a high-quality multifunctional translation tool which is used for work and study by more than 5 million people. ABOUT ABBYY LINGVO 12

ABBYY Lingvo is an electronic dictionary with the most comprehensive and up-to-date databases for 10 languages: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Turkish, Ukrainian, Russian, and Latin. It includes over a hundred general and specialist dictionaries which are the most authoritative reference books for their respective subject domains. ABBYY Lingvo is the easiest way to get an accurate translation for any word.

Each Lingvo entry provides comprehensive information about its headword - translations, definitions, stress, pronunciation, usage examples, and inflected forms.

Lingvo has been designed with the needs of the language learner in mind. Its dictionary cards provide translations accompanied with numerous usage examples, show the correct pronunciation and stress for the headwords, and list the inflected forms to prevent errors in grammar. Lingvo includes a handy flash-card utility called Lingvo Tutor which will help learners memorize new words.

Lingvo can be installed on desktop computers, notebooks, PDAs, and smartphones.
