Languages and Groups bar

The Languages and Groups bar displays the current translation direction and the name of the currently selected dictionary group.

To select a different translation direction, click the source language (on the left) or the target language (on the right) and select the required language in the drop-down list.

To swap the source and target languages, click (Reverse translation direction).

Clicking the name of the current dictionary group displays the list of all dictionary groups available in Lingvo and the Create a new group... command which opens the New Group dialog box. To select a different dictionary group, click the name of the current dictionary group and select a new group in the drop-down list that opens. The Bookshelf displays all the dictionaries of the selected dictionary group. You can hide the Bookshelf by clicking .

 

Bookshelf

The Bookshelf displays all of the dictionaries of the selected dictionary group. Each dictionary has its own icon on the Bookshelf. Clicking a dictionary icon will make the dictionary active or inactive.

To the right of the last dictionary on the Bookshelf, a button is located. Use this button to add dictionaries to the group and to remove dictionaries from the group. Clicking opens:

  1. The list of all the installed dictionaries of the current translation direction. The dictionaries with a tick next to them are part of the group and are displayed on the Bookshelf.

  2. The Edit… command which opens the Languages and Dictionaries dialog box.

Command bar

The command bar contains the buttons for the most commonly used commands: Translate, Find (initiates a full-text search), Show Word Forms, Create/Edit Card, Close Temporary Cards and Dialog Boxes, and Run ABBYY Lingvo Tutor.

Button Description
Translate (Enter)

Translates the word or phrase you typed in the search field.

Search (Ctrl+F) Carries out a full-text search in the enabled dictionaries of the current translation direction.
Show Word Forms (Ctrl+W) Displays the grammatical forms of the word you typed in the search field.
Create/Edit Card... (Ctrl + Num+) Opens the Create/Edit Card dialog box, where you can create and edit cards in your user dictionaries.
Close Temporary Cards and Dialog Boxes (Shift+Esc) Closes all temporary cards (i.e. cards for which the button is disabled).
Run ABBYY Lingvo Tutor Runs ABBYY Lingvo Tutor.
