This article discusses support for Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) addressing in the 2007 Microsoft Office system, and includes the following applications:

NoteNote:

Microsoft Office Groove 2007 does not support IPv6.

Internet Protocol supported environments

With the addition of IPv6 support, the 2007 Office system applications that run on Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), or Windows Vista support the following environments:

  • Pure Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) environment

  • Mixed IPv4 and IPv6 environment

  • Pure IPv6 environment

In a Windows environment, "mixed" can be defined as one of the following likely scenarios (but there might be others):

  • Both IPv4 and IPv6 protocols are running in your environment.

  • Some of your client computers are using IPv4 and some of them are using IPv6.

  • Your client computers are using IPv4, but the computer that is running Microsoft SQL Server 2005 is using IPv6.

In addition, user interfaces (UIs) for the 2007 Office system applications support display of both IPv4 and IPv6 type IP addresses.

User scenarios

The 2007 Office system applications have been designed to support IPv6 addressing to match support in Windows operating systems. In IPv6 environments, as well as in IPv4 or mixed IP environments, users can browse network locations; open, save, publish, and insert objects, pictures, and files; open data sources; access shared workspaces; get document updates from network paths; and other tasks that use any of the following:

  • Universal naming convention (UNC)

  • Server name, where Domain Name System (DNS) uses an IPv6 address (for example, \\server\share)

  • Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)

  • Hypertext Transfer Protocol over Secure Sockets Layer (HTTPS)

  • File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

  • Literal address
