Speaker Properties

Use the Speaker Properties dialog box to select the audio output device to use and to change speaker settings.

Sound playback option Description
Audio device to use Specifies which audio output device, such as a sound card or sound controller, to use.
Advanced If available, click to open Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel. For more information about changing speaker settings in Sounds and Audio Devices, see Windows Help.
Play WM Audio Professional content over an S/PDIF digital output Specifies that files that have been encoded by using the Windows Media Audio 9 Professional codec play back over a Sony/Philips digital interface (S/PDIF) connector to consumer audio devices. This feature requires the following:

  • This feature is unavailable if DirectX 9.0b or later is not installed on your computer.

Performance option Description
Use 24-bit audio for audio CDs Specifies that High Definition Compatible Digital (HDCD) CDs play back using their full audio quality. For more information about HDCD, see the Microsoft HDCD Web site.

  • A 24-bit sound card is required to play HDCD content at its full audio quality.
