Automatic media information updates for files

Option Description
Retrieve additional information from the Internet Specifies that the Player automatically obtains and updates missing media information for music files that are added to or stored in your library, if the information is available. By default, the music files in your My Music folder are added to your library.

If this check box is selected and you perform any of the following actions, the Player tries to update any missing media information in your music files by sending data about the files to a database operated by WindowsMedia.com:

  • Use the Library feature for the first time after updating the Player
  • Add files to your library by searching your computer
  • Add files to monitored folders, such as My Music

For example, if you have music files that contain the artist name but not the album name, the Player adds the album name to the file after retrieving the information from the database.

The Player also adds album art to files and music folders in your My Music folder.

Note Image Notes

  • By default, only missing media information, such as album or artist name, is added to your music files. You can choose to overwrite existing media information by clicking the Overwrite all media information option on the Library tab.
  • When you display the Info Center View pane, the Player retrieves related media information from your default online store, if available, but does not update the information in your files.
  • Media information that is retrieved may not be in your local language.
Only add missing information Specifies that the Player only add missing media information from the Internet for music files copied by using the Player, if the information is available.
Overwrite all media information Specifies that the Player replace and update media information from the Internet for all music files copied by using the Player, if the information is available.
Rename music files using rip music settings Specifies that the Player rename the files in the folder that contains your ripped files when updated media information is obtained for the files.

To let the Player rename music files in another folder, you can specify the folder to which files are ripped by using the Rip Music tab.

Rearrange music in rip music folder, using rip music settings Specifies that the Player reorganize the files in the folder that contains your ripped files when updated media information is obtained for the files.

To let the Player rearrange music files in another folder, you can specify the folder to which files are ripped by using the Rip Music tab.

Maintain my star ratings as global ratings in the media files Specifies that you want to save the user ratings for the music files in your library in the files.

If you use this option, the user ratings are included in your music files so that they can be maintained if you copy the files to another computer.
