Add to Library by Searching Computer

Use the Add to Library By Searching Computer dialog box to search for digital media files to add to your library. You can limit the scope of your search and specify the size of the digital media files that are added to your library.

The following options are displayed in the Add to Library By Searching Computer dialog box.

Search option	Description
Search on	Displays the drives on which you can search for digital media files. To search computers on your network, you must first map or assign a drive letter to other computers.
Look in	Specifies a folder on an individual drive to search for digital media files.
Browse	Click to locate a folder.
New files only (fast)	Specifies that media information is updated only for new files added to Library.
New files and existing files in library without media information	Specifies that media information is updated for new files added to Library and for existing files without media information.
New files and all existing files in library (slow)	Specifies that media information is updated for new files added to Library and for all existing files in Library.

Advanced search option	Description
Add files previously deleted from library	Specifies whether files you have deleted from Library are added to Library again when your computer or drive is searched for digital media files.
Add volume leveling values for all files (slow)	Specifies that volume leveling values are added to files in Library. Volume leveling enables the files to play back at a similar volume level.

Links to all files found in the location specified are added to Library in the following categories:

Links to music are added to your All Music category
Links to television programs recorded with Windows XP Media Center Edition are added to your All TV category
Links to picture files in .jpg format are added to your All Pictures category
Links to video files are added to your All Video category

Note Image Notes

If you click <User-selected search path> in the Search on box, you can type the path to the folder without mapping a drive letter.
If you share your computer with another person, the other person's digital media files may be added to your library and vice versa when you add files by searching the computer. You may not be able to play the other person's files, depending on the permissions set on the folder that contains the files.
The advanced search options that you specify in the Add To Library By Searching Computer dialog box apply to the contents of any folders that you add to your library and any folders that are being monitored for content.
