Document Type group
Autodetect layout If you set this option, the text arrangement on the page is detected automatically: recognition of all text types, including multi-column texts, texts with tables and pictures is performed automatically. This value is set by default.
Single column Specifies that the text to be recognized is formatted in one column. Use this option if automatic page layout analysis incorrectly determined the text type as multi-column.
Plain text formatted with spaces Specifies the text is formatted in one column and set in monospaced font of a same size. In the recognized text left indents will be represented as spaces; every line is made a separate paragraph and the original paragraphs will be separated by empty lines. Use this option if, say, you recognize code printouts.
Clear background noise Clears the background noise in the document. Only used for recognition of images of documents that have a  colored background in a uniform color (say, newspaper and journal articles).
Note:
  1. The Clear background noise removes the background noise from a temporary image used for recognition, the source image remains unaffected.
  2. If the recognized text has text instead of pictures (and the text itself contains many errors), it means that the picture was treated as text due to the use of Clear background noise option. If you like the recognized text to contain the image, untick the Clear background noise option.
Look for barcodes Set this option if you want FineReader to recognize barcodes on your documents. FineReader will create separate barcode type blocks for them; the barcode will be displayed as a series of letters and numbers in the recognized text.
This option is not set by default.
Print Type group
Auto Set this option to have the text print type to be detected automatically. This option is set by default. It suits all print types.
Typewriter Set this option if you recognize a typewriter printout. The recognition quality increases in this case.
Dot matrix printer Set this option if you recognize a dot matrix printer printout. The recognition quality increases in this case.
Tables group
One line of text per cell Set this option if you only recognize tables with one line of text per each cell. The table layout will be analyzed more readily.
No merged cells in table Set this option if you only recognize tables with no merged cells. The table layout will be analyzed more readily.
Training group
Do not use user patterns This option is set by default. It will suit you in most cases.
Train user pattern  Set this option to train your user pattern during recognition. If this option is set, the 2-Read button will start the recognition in the Train user pattern mode. The Manual pattern training dialog will open.  You may then train the system to recognize the uncertain characters.
Note: The created pattern is useful only for recognizing texts set in the same font of the same size and scanned with the same resolution as the document you trained your pattern on.
Use user pattern  Set this option if you want your user pattern to be used during recognition.
Pattern Editor
(button)
Opens the Pattern Editor dialog. You may create, rename, delete, edit and activate patterns in the dialog.
Use built-in patterns  Specifies that the built-in patterns are used during recognition; this option is set by default. Do not use this option if you want to train FineReader to recognize decorative or non-standard fonts (e.g. Tibetan).
