The Bat! offers you two ways to delete messages from folders: Normal and Alternative. If you define different deletion methods for them, you can simply, by the stroke of a key, decide on the fly how to delete a message.

This can be an account-wide setting or any you choose folder can have individual deletion settings.

Normal deletion (<Del>/toolbar button)

Move messages to the Trash folder

As it says, this option will move any messages you delete to The Bat!'s system folder "Trash". Provides easy access, and independent folder and view settings for deleted messages.

Mark as deleted, do not use the Trash folder

The Bat! will only set a flag that a message is deleted but leave it in its current folder.

Move to the specified folder

You can state that deleted messages will be moved to a specific folder within The Bat!'s folder tree instead of marked as deleted or moved to a trash folder.

Alternative deletion (<Shift>+<Del>/toolbar button)

Two differences in comparison to Normal deletion: Additonal to the button or key used with Normal deletion you have to press <Shift>; you can define this deletion method as the default for purging folder.

Use alternative deletion method for purging folders

Check this to let The Bat! purge folders with this method. Coupled with the "Move to the specified folder" option and "Keep messages in the base for days", this method makes for a powerful automated archiving system.

Additional settings

Compress emptied folders automatically

Check this and The Bat! will remove all messages from the message base. Note: Without regularly compressing folders, The Bat!'s message base will continually grow bigger because the actual data from deleted messages remain in the base.

Purge Unread messages

Unread messages having reached a set time limit for a folder to retain messages will be set deleted. Beware: You may lose important messages with this setting checked!

Mark deleted messages as read

Use this option if you automatically filter certain messages, like unsolicited advertising ("spam"), and want them set as read.
