Common Problems

Mail cannot be sent

Check:

† For an open Internet connection
† Correct installation of TCP/IP
† Network or modem cable connections to your computer
† Correct settings for SMTP, IMAP or POP3 servers
† Log-on name and password for your POP3, IMAP and SMTP server
† Does your ISP require SMTP authorisation (like POP before SMTP)

If your problem persists, contact your network administrator or Internet Service provider.

Message text is unreadable

† Check that you are using the correct character translation table.
† Check the message's Content-transfer-encoding header - it is possible that the message is encoded using a method unknown to The Bat!
In this case ask the sender to re-send the message using base64 or quoted-printable.

How can I copy a contact to another address book group?

1. In the address book right-click on the contact
2. Select Properties
3. Go to the General tab
4. Click the ellipsis button next to the Groups field
5. Check each group you want this contact to appear in

If you need differing values for the contact depending on which group it is in - i.e. two different office addresses - you have to create separate entries for each group.

How can I create multi-line cookies

If you'd like to create a tag line in your signature which spans more than one line:

When planets run around in circles, we say they are orbiting.

When people do it, we say they are crazy.

Your cookie line needs a line break character; in The Bat! it is defined as "\n". Just put it at any appropriate place in your cookie:

When planets run around in circles, we say they are orbiting.\nWhen people do it, we say they are crazy.

You can have more than one per cookie.

Making The Bat! the default mailer for Netscape:

1. Download nsproto.exe
2. Install and execute it

When I use '%' characters in a template, they disappear?

"%" serves The Bat! as a so-called escape character for macros, it has to be escaped itself when it is used literally. E.g. "100%" in a template will come up as "100"; use "100%%" instead.

Error This version of PGP requires an Administration Preferences file

1. Create a simple empty text file
2. Save it under the name pgp_admin.PRF
3. Put it in your PGP directory

How can I print a range of pages? The option is greyed out!

The option is greyed out only if the message consists of a single page. Any message consisting of two or more pages will show the option.

When I receive HTML mail, the pictures don't show.

One of the security features of The Bat!: The program does not download images from outside sources! Only images embedded in the message are shown.

To see the complete HTML message including the pictures, just double-click on the HTML attachment and open it in your favourite browser.

How do I get rid of Re[2]: numbering in the subject?

1. Go to Account Properties -> Templates -> Reply
2. Uncheck Use reply numbering ...

If you only want reply numbering disabled for some messages use the %SINGLERE macro in the appropriate Reply Template(s).

Why do my paragraphs run together when I try to start a new one?

You have Auto-format turned on in your editor preferences; it will automatically reflow the text within a paragraph.

In The Bat! a paragraph is defined by a blank line at the end. If you want a new paragraph you have to either put in an empty line or turn off Auto-format:

1. Go to Options -> Preferences -> Viewer/Editor -> Editor preferences
2. Uncheck Auto-format

Or in the message editor

1. Go to Utilities
2. Uncheck Auto-format

See also keyboard shortcuts.
