Adding Words to Tutor Dictionaries


Adding new words to Tutor dictionaries means creating cards for these words in the dictionary window. To switch to the dictionary window, click the  Open Dictionary... button in the exercise window.

A Tutor dictionary card contains a word to be learnt, its translations, transcription and usage examples. 

To create a card, you can use:

To create a card in ABBYY Lingvo Tutor:
  1. Select the Create Card... command on the Actions menu or click on the toolbar.
  2. In the Dictionary Card dialog box that opens, fill in the required fields and click Save.

Note:

  • You can use the Translate with ABBYY Lingvo command to add translations to the card. This method will only work if there is a card in ABBYY Lingvo for the word in question. You can type several translations, separating them by commas.
  • Once you have added a translation, the status of the card changes to To learn. You can change the status if required.

You can add words and phrases to a Tutor dictionary from ABBYY Lingvo. In ABBYY Lingvo, open the card of the word or phrase you wish to add. You can open ABBYY Lingvo cards directly from ABBYY Lingvo Tutor, without launching ABBYY Lingvo. Do one of the following:
  • Type the word or phrase you wish to add in the entry field and select the Translate with ABBYY Lingvo... command on the Tools menu.
  • When creating a card in the Tutor dictionary, enter the word or phrase you wish to add in the Word field and click (Translate with ABBYY Lingvo).

In the ABBYY Lingvo card that opens:

  • Click (Add to Tutor Dictionary) on the card toolbar. The headword from the Lingvo card will be copied to the Word field of the Tutor dictionary card. The fields Translation, Transcription, Example, and Part of Speech will be filled in automatically: the Lingvo will copy the first translation, transcription, etc. from its card into the Tutor card.
  • Select the Add to Tutor Dictionary... command on the shortcut menu of the card. This will place the headword of the ABBYY Lingvo card into the Word field and the selected word into the Translation field (if no words are selected, Lingvo will copy the word on which you placed the mouse pointer). 

Note: If the ABBYY Lingvo card has the Sound facility, the sound will be automatically added to the Tutor card.

Only the Word field will be completed in the cards of the newly added words. Once you have entered their translations in the Translation field, the cards will be available for exercises.

You can add words from ABBYY Lingvo History:

  1. Select the Add Cards from Lingvo History command on the Tools menu or click the "..." button on the toolbar in the dictionary window.
  2. In the Add Cards from Lingvo History dialog box, select the words and phrases you wish to add and click Add >>. The added words will be displayed in the word list window.
  3. Click the Add to Dictionary button.

Only the Word field will be completed in the cards of the newly added words. Once you have entered their translations in the Translation field, the cards will be available for exercises.
