This article discusses requirements for applying service packs to applications in the 2007 Microsoft Office system.

Updating the 2007 Office system

The 2007 Office system applications are installed through multiple Microsoft Installer (.msi) packages. (For more information, see Setup architecture overview for the 2007 Office system.)

If you are updating 2007 Office system applications manually (for example, without using Microsoft Update), you must make sure to apply each individual service pack update that is available for each installed 2007 Office system application. Otherwise, detection tools, such as Microsoft Update, that you run later might indicate that a service pack is needed even though it has been installed.

If update detection tools indicate that a service pack for the 2007 Office system is needed even though it has been installed, you must install any missing service pack updates for the installed 2007 Office system applications. For example, if you are using the Updates folder to deploy updates in your initial 2007 Office system application installations (and therefore extracting the .msp files from the updates to the Updates folder on the 2007 Office system network installation point), you must make sure that all .msp files for the required service pack updates are included.

For information about how to test updates and verify the list of .msp files before you copy them to the Updates folder, see Testing and verifying the Windows Installer patch (.msp) files in Distribute product updates for the 2007 Office system. For more information about how to use the Updates folder to deploy updates, see "Updates folder" in Distribute product updates for the 2007 Office system.

SP2 updates for the 2007 Office system

For a list of all individual 2007 Office system Service Pack 2 (SP2) updates, see List of all 2007 Office system Service Pack 2 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Service Pack 2 packages (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=154285). This article provides links to each 2007 Office system and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP2 update download package, and links to each update's descriptive Knowledge Base article.

ImportantImportant:
  • If you have installed multiple language versions of a 2007 Office system application, you must install each language-specific update package for each installed language version.

  • The .msi packages for the 2007 Office system language packs always install all possible 2007 Office system components, including Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007. However, The 2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 2 (SP2) (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=148353) update package does not include the update for Office SharePoint Designer 2007. Therefore, if you have installed a 2007 Office system language pack, you must also install the Office SharePoint Designer 2007 SP2 update, even if you do not have Office SharePoint Designer installed.

SP1 updates for the 2007 Office system

The following table lists SP1 updates for the 2007 Office system. The first column in the table provides the name of the update with a link to the update on the Microsoft Download Center. The second column in the table provides the name of the associated Microsoft Knowledge Base article with a link to the article that lists all of the .msp files that are included in the update package. You can use this information to verify that you have all the needed .msp files.

However, The 2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 1 (SP1) (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=108399) update package does not include the update for Office SharePoint Designer 2007. Therefore, if you have installed a 2007 Office system language pack, you must also install the Office SharePoint Designer 2007 SP1 update, even if you do not have Office SharePoint Designer installed.
