Dictionary Groups


In ABBYY Lingvo, you can group dictionaries by subject and use a particular dictionary group for the kind of text for which it was created. ABBYY Lingvo comes with several pre-defined dictionary groups. You can:

The dictionaries will be displayed on the Bookshelf in the order in which they were arranged when creating the dictionary group. Dictionary entries in the card window will also be displayed in this order.

Creating a dictionary group
There are two ways of creating a new dictionary group:

Method 1

  1. Select the Languages and Dictionaries… command on the Tools menu.
  2. In the Languages and Dictionaries dialog box, click the Dictionary Groups tab.
  3. Select the required translation direction and click (New Group).
  4. In the New Group dialog box that opens, type a name for your new group and click OK.
  5. The name of the new group will be displayed in the Group name field.
  6. In the Available dictionaries column, select the dictionaries that you would like to add to the group and click the button to move them to the Selected dictionaries column.
  7. The dictionaries of the new group will be displayed on the Bookshelf in the order in which they are arranged in the Selected dictionaries column.

    Tip: To change the order of the dictionaries in this column, select a dictionary and move it up or down by clicking the or button respectively.

    You can change the order of the dictionaries directly on the Bookshelf. Hold down the Alt key and use your mouse to drag dictionary icons to the desired location.

Method 2

  1. Click the Languages and Groups bar and select <Create New Group..> in the drop-down list that opens.
  2. In the New Group dialog box that opens, type a name for your new group and click OK.

The name of the new group will be displayed on the Languages and Groups bar.

Important! This method creates an empty dictionary group. To add dictionaries to your new group, click on the Bookshelf and in the list that opens, click the dictionary that you wish to add to the group. A tick will appear next to the dictionary name and the dictionary will be added to the group.

Removing a dictionary group
  1. Select the Languages and Dictionaries… command on the Tools menu.
  2. In the Languages and Dictionaries dialog box, click the Dictionary Groups tab.
  3. Select the group that you wish to remove and click (Remove Group).
Adding a dictionary to a group
  1. Select a dictionary group in the drop-down list of the Languages and Groups bar.
    The dictionaries comprising this group will now be displayed on the Bookshelf.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • On the Bookshelf, click and in the list that opens, click the dictionary that you wish to add to the group. A tick will appear next to the dictionary name and the dictionary will be added to the group.
    • Open the Languages and Dictionaries dialog box (Tools>Languages and Dictionaries…). On the Dictionary Groups tab, use the button to move the dictionary from the Available dictionaries column to the Selected dictionaries column.
    • Drag and drop the required dictionary file (*.adc, *.lsd or *.lud) onto the Bookshelf. In this case the dictionary will be added to the dictionary group of the corresponding translation direction which was used last.
      If this is a monolingual dictionary, it will also be added to the dictionary groups whose source language is the same as the language of this monolingual dictionary. If a dictionary group already contains this dictionary, it will not be added.

      Important! If a dictionary with this name and translation direction is already present in some dictionary group, the dictionary will not be added to the Bookshelf.

Removing a dictionary from a group
  1. Select the group from which you wish to remove a dictionary.
  2. Do one of the following:
  • Open the Languages and Dictionaries dialog box (Tools>Languages and Dictionaries…). On the Dictionary Groups tab, use the button to move the dictionary from the Selected dictionaries column to the Available dictionaries column.
  • On the Bookshelf, click and in the list that opens, click the dictionary that you wish to remove from the group. The tick next to the dictionary name will disappear and the dictionary will be removed from the group.
  • Hold down the Alt key and drag the dictionary outside of the Bookshelf.
